If you were a fly on the walls of 38 Calumet Street a few years ago, then you'd have known about The Explosion. Although they hadn't practiced or written any songs, the concept had been kicked around between founding members Damian Genuardi (ex-In My Eyes), Matt Hock and David Walsh numerous times, enough to consider the idea a band before a note was played. The idea was simple, a loud, boisterous, punk rock band fronted by Matt that would incorporate the melody and attitude of bands like The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Naked Raygun and The Buzzcocks with their personalities and a vast knowledge of music past and present. Within a few practices, the ball was rolling and what at first seemed to be a tounge in cheek extension of "Million Dollar Matt's" infamously humerous personality, blossomed into a serious staple of the Boston scene. With a full schedule of shows booked and unmatched enthusiam, the path was laid out and eventually a demo tape recorded by Dean Baltulonis of Salad Days Studio (Madball, Jejune, Fastbreak) and produced by Anthony Pappalardo (guiarist of In My Eyes) caught the attention of Jade Tree Records among other labels. Shortly after they completed an East Coast jaunt with The Nerve Agents, The Explosion found themselves inking a deal with Jade Tree Records and solidifying their line up with Boston punk veteran Samuel Cave, former guitarist of The Trouble. With the momentum at it's peak the next step was to hammer out an LP titled "Flash Flash Flash" at Salad Days Studio in DC with producer Brian McTernan (Texas Is The Reason, Snapcase, In My Eyes, Cave In). The attitude and dynamics that marked the band were intensified, polished and streamlined and the result was a record heralded as the most important Boston punk record since "This Is Boston Not LA." The band hit the road to back these bold statements with diverse acts such as Cave In, The Queers and Grade. The tarantulas continue to attack this fall with a brand new 5 song EP titled "Steal This" on Revelation Records that contains their live staple, "E.X.P.L.O.S.I.O.N." and four other well crafted bursts of punk. Produced once again by Brian McTernan and boasting artowrk by bassist Damian, the new EP continues their tradition while pushing the envelope of their dynamics. "Stel This" completely exemplifies the chemistry that can only be achieved by a tight knit group of individuals who share the same vision. |
