Firewind

"Burning Earth"
(Leviathan Records)
by Jonathan Mariante

This is Firewind's second album. It was co-produced by guitarist Gus G. and David Chastain (metal guitar hero and owner of Leviathan), and Dave appears to have picked a winner here! Firewind are a very good band who play European style power metal, melodic but with a hard edge. They are comparable to Helloween, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius, Edguy, Angel Dust, etc. Gus G. (a renowned guitarist who has played in many bands) really rips on his guitar, cranking out those riffs and solos like there's no tomorrow! He's a very skilled player, with some Yngwie influence. Singer Stephen Frederick has a gutsy, powerful voice and can sing with the best of 'em! Bassist Petros Christo and drummer Stian Kristoffersen complete the lineup, making up a steady, solid rhythm section. All the songs on "Burning Earth" are classic style power metal tunes, most galloping at full speed, with a few mid tempo ones thrown in, and the closing song, "The Longest Day", is a ballad, which makes a moving anti war statement. The whole album rocks! The band kicks ass and are very talented, and all the songs are well written. Anyone who likes traditional/power metal should definitely dig Firewind!
