Hard 20 |
Salty the Pocketknifeself-titled This is a rather strange release. Luckily, I happen to like strange music. It's hard to not like this disc. Truth be told, when I first gave it a listen, I was like, "NAH!" But, I couldn't turn it off and I couldn't take it out of my CD player. I had to go through the entire release and by the time I got to track four, I was hooked. I was totally into this one. Now, when I experience something like this, I usually end up coming up with some off the wall description based on what I'm hearing. I'm usually way off base with what I think. But, hey, I've gotta call 'em as I hear 'em. You may pick up this release and not hear anything that I heard. So, that's why you need to check it out for yourself and form your own opinion. So, what did I hear? Well, at the core, I'd have to say that Salty The Pocketknife is a hard rock band. I'm also gonna throw the words alternative and experimental in here. Dead Kennedys, Rush, Ham Sandwich and Jackyl...those three bands came to mind. I don't know, it's like getting high without taking drugs. The best word to really use here is original. I can't honestly think of anyone else who's doing anything that might even come close to what Salty The Pocketknife is doing and, in this business, we all know that's a good thing. Like I said, you need to check this one out for yourself and form your own opinion. But, be warned, it might not float your boat when you first listen to it. But, you will call yourself a fan by the time you get though these twelve songs. |
