Alice Donut

"Three Sisters"
(Howler Records)
by Jonathan Mariante

Alice Donut is back, and as tasty as ever! This band made a name for themselves on the underground punk scene during the 80s, becoming an underground sensation. They were signed by Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra, to his Alternative Tentacles label. The Donuts played their own style of avant-garde quasi-punk, sometimes playing straight ahead punk rock, which sometimes had a power pop flavor to it, and sometimes venturing into some rather bizarre musical territory. They disbanded in '96 (after their 1000th show!), but have now returned with a brand new album. Most of the songs on "...Sisters" are straight ahead punk tunes, played in the classic Donut style, some of which are rather short and sweet! "She Tells Me Things", the opening track, is one such song. This is followed by "Kiss Me", a harder, darker tune, in which singer Tomas Antona songs in an evil voice, like a serial killer taunting his victim! Other rockers include "Kkick", "Problems", "Mister Pinkus", "Helsinki", and "Wired". There are also some slower tunes on here, in a Smashing Pumpkins/Pearl Jam type vein, such as "Cost" (another shortie!), "Setting Sun", "Running Arms In The Phillipines", and "Farmer's Almanac". Alice Donut has been a big influence on many of today's big names in punk! Just listen, and you'll see where many of the bands around today got their ideas from! Alice Donut, however, are quite a unique band who can't be copied, and play punk in their own special way! Many of today's "punk" bands are really just pop groups in disguise, so it's good to have Alice Donut back to show how it's REALLY done!
