Corbin King

"Destination"
(Leviathan Records)
by Jonathan Mariante

Corbin King is a shred master in the vein of Yngwie, Satriani, or Vai, with a touch of Ritchie Blackmore, who shreds for all he's worth on this hard rocking instrumental guitar album. He's a great player who smokes from beginning to end, on all eight songs. Some songs are faster than others, the speedier numbers being "Mind Games", "Hurricane X", "Chasing Rainbows", and "Hot Nights". The slower tunes include "Day Of Doom" (which lives up to its name! It's a doomy, Sabbath influenced song with a bit of Zeppelin's "When The Levy Breaks" in it), "Prisoner Of Time", "Destination" (both of which are rather bluesy with a bit of a Stevie Ray Vaughn flavor), and the heavier "Armed And Ready". Corbin covers a number of different styles in his playing, from neo-classical to metal, blues to classic rock, but keeps his music very raw and stripped to basics, no frills. He is talented enough to be in the same league as many guitar legends In fact, he is helped out by another renowned guitar player on this album. Bass duties are handled by none other than David Chastain himself (who owns Leviathan)! His bass playing is very good (which is to be expected, being that Chastain is such an awesome guitarist!), a little bottom heavy, as is the percussion, courtesy of Mike Haid, but that gives the music more impact. Two great guitar players on one album should make this a treat to listen to, for anyone who is a guitar aficionado! Note also that this CD is part of a series of three put together by Chastain called Guitar Masters. In this series, Chastain and Haid laid down the foundation, then let three other guitarists record individual albums with that musical foundation, each not hearing the others' recordings until they were finished. Michael Harris and Joe Stump were the other two guitarists who participated in this project, which was a very interesting and cool idea indeed!
