Syanide Kickself-titled Syanide Kick are one of those bands who like to pretend the LA hair metal scene of the 80s never ended-and that's certainly not a bad thing! Who can fault a band for playing what they like and not jumping on any "flavor of the month" bandwagons? And they do a pretty damn good job of what they do, too! The Kickers hail from the Sunset Strip, and feature former members of Tuff and the Big Bang Babies, two veterans of the Hollywood glam scene. Syanide Kick play raunchy, sleazy, edgy, hard rocking glam metal, in the vein of Faster Pussycat or Jetboy. The disc begins with an intro that sounds like it was recorded during the '92 LA riots, then goes into the first song, the hard rocking "Hollywood Angel". Most of the songs are rockers in this vein, but we do have a (somewhat mandatory) ballad in "Tonight", which reminded me of Skid Row's "I Remember You"; a poppier rock tune called "Young And Wild", which has shades of "18 And Life" in it; and two bluesy numbers, "I'm Lost" and "Sister Groove". One song I got a kick out of was "In You Or On You" (doesn't the title just say it all?), which has got to be the raunchiest of the raunchy! Get a load of this lyric-"Shove my love right down your throat/Drank so much you almost choked". Need I say more? Syanide Kick have made a hard rocking debut with this album, playing in the classic 80s rock style. They sound like one of the bands who could have been all over MTV back in the day, or could even be a band to help rekindle that scene that ruled the world back then. One way or another, this is a very enjoyable rock album, and it is a nice break from today's sounds. |
