Introducing Artist Rainer Kalwitz

After graduating from high school, Rainer Kalwitz (born 27th December 1970) worked for three years as an illustrator for the FORD-Company in Cologne. While being there he perfected the technique of precise drawing, which is important for technical presentations and is still visible in his works. In 1991 he received a certificate for extraordinary artistic talent from the University of Münster. In 1993 he started to study graphic arts at the University of Düsseldorf. That same year he made his first cover-illustration for a German Progressive-Rock-Band (LORIAN, "Virginal mind", 1994, Edel), which after the release of the CD aroused great interest with other labels. The consequence of this were important orders by bands from all over the world. Besides a detailed brushwork, Rainer Kalwitz basically uses the technique of airbrush, but he is not to be regarded as an "airbrusher", as his works are very different from the motifs of this area, which are often quite stereotyped. On the contrary, intense pre-studies underlie the final version of a picture, often in form of a series of photos or sketches. Thus the result has to be regarded as the end of a long technical and creative process. Important influences for the art of Rainer Kalwitz are among others the works of Michael Whelan, Rodney Matthews, Paul Hudson or also Caspar David Friedrich. Though it is unnecessary to categorise his works, the keywords in connection with his art must be "phantastic realism", concerning the style and the composition of his subjects. But in spite of all realistic appearance his pictures have nevertheless a clear component in painting, which is far away from the (mostly superficial) mimetic ambitions of photorealistic artists.

David Robert was born in Cambridge, England. During his youth, he developed a fascination with cemeteries; during his teen years, he melded that fascination with photography, and started taking pictures of various graveyards in England and Wales.

These days, living in Reno, Nevada, David has expanded his subject matter to include another fascination: music. He loves the energy and drama of the live concert shot, and he's photographed bands ranging from the Deftones to Slaves on Dope, travelling to venues throughout the West Coast.

David is the contributing photo editor of the Reno News & Review, the award-winning alternative weekly newspaper covering Northern Nevada. In addition to being published in the RN&R, David's work has appeared in Gig magazine and on websites for bands such as Union Undergound, Mission UK and Morpheus Sister, not to mention various local and regional band websites.

David continues to travel the West Coast, photographing live shows and -- old habits die hard -- graveyards. You can view David's work on his Website at www.geocities.com/davefoto2000. Be sure to check out "The Bone Orchard" section. You can also see his work at MorpheusSister.com.

All images © 1999-2001 Mike Bohatch.

Being involved in the arts in one form or another, most of his life, Mike Bohatch took his passion for horror movies and the love for creating bizarre images into the realm of illustration. While working many years in the digital field in all aspects of print, design, the web and multimedia it wasn't until implementing his studies of traditional fine arts, that he began to bring true realization to his ideas and visions. By combining the physical side of fine arts with the electronic realm of computer graphics he began a process of imagemaking he refers to as "digital organics".

Currently Mike specializes in horror and dark, surreal, metaphysical illustration combining a mixture of drawing, painting, collage, photography, and digital compositing. Professional work includes numerous CD art compositions, magazine illustrations and covers, comic covers, motion graphics and video covers.

He has an extensive gallery of works online. For more info on Mike Bohatch & his works visit http://www.eyesofchaos.com

Marcel De Jong, goth illustrator, born 1967 in Amsterdam. Called the Skeleton Man at the age of eight, not only for being extremely skinny, but also for his obsession for drawing nothing but skulls. Institutionalized at 21 years of age by a broken heart and therefore put his pens & brushes to rest for six years. Origionally started as a commercial illustrator, but became very depressed by drawing "happy stuff", now he choses his own projects and claims he has to draw "dried out stiffs" now & then.
