SLIK HELVETIKA KICKS ASS ON 'KRYPT KICKER 5' EPThere was a time seemingly not long ago that many rock bands seemed afraid to show off their 'heavy metal side.' This is where Slik Helvetika comes in - the group is an unashamed metal band to the bone, as evidenced by their recent EP, 'Krypt Kicker 5.' Issued via Screaming Ferret Wreckords and Metro City Records, the release touches upon all of the group's influences, as the vocals and guitar work would undoubtedly make Rob Halford and Zakk Wylde mighty proud. Led by singer/guitarist Mikhall Myers, the group which also includes guitarist J. Lee Haven, bassist Kurt Wagenseil, and drummer Mark Bennett - has quickly created a name for themselves throughout the metal underground. Originally forming in 2005, Myers assembled the group after he had "Put the metal away for a while after escaping the woes of being signed by a major label throughout the 80's", while leading a band called Destroyer. By their time of maturity, musical trends had changed, and rather than playing a lackluster popular genre, "I decided not to be half-hearted, and waited until powerful and energetic music with balls would have a chance again. That time is now!" Myers isn't kidding, as Slik Helvetika is one mighty metallic beast, and such tracks as "Bastard" and "Pray for the Future" prove it. And they also break up the fury with several skits throughout 'Krypt Kicker 5,' which only adds to the intensity once they return with another hard hitter. Just don't ask Myers to select a personal favorite. "Every song and skit on that disc is our favorite. We had to choose from 62 songs." And it appears as though 'Krypt Kicker 5' is only the beginning for these metal diehards, as the next year will be a busy one for Slik Helvetika. "We are looking at options to get on a tour in '08, and we hit the studio to begin recording our full-length new disc, titled 'Slik, Six, Six,' in January 2008. We again have a lot of material to choose from. It is "up in the air" what label will get the disc right now. We are also talking about licensing our underground self-titled debut." No doubt you will be hearing more from this fiercely rocking band in the coming months. And lastly, what's up with the band's moniker? "The band's name means 'Eat the Wovenesta' in Siamese. Just kidding! First of all, it sounds cool. Now...everyone has a homework assignment and should find out what Confoederatio Helvetica means in Latin, why the Helvetican warriors were thought to be invincible in the 1500's, and which Helvetii tribe made captive Roman soldiers pass under the yoke upon the victory in the battle of Gaul which enraged Caesar." http://www.slikhelvetika.com SAOSIN RETURN TO THE ROAD IN 2008 WITH WINTER HEADLINE TOUR BEGINNING JANUARY 21 ARMOR FOR SLEEP TO SHARE THE BILLThe Bled And Meriwether Set To Open (Dec. 5th, New York, NY) After spending most of 2007 crossing the country on tour, Southern California quintet Saosin has announced that they will begin 2008 on the road with new headline dates beginning January 21st at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, AZ through February 14th at the Senator Theatre in Chico, CA, with additional shows to be added (full schedule below). TICKETS WC NEW CAMPING AREA FOR DISABLED MORE ACTS TO FOLLOW ACCREDITATION JETBOY Takes Off…again!!Frank Meyer, Editor, KNAC.COM, put it this way: "Lipstick, lace, leather, cheap booze, cheaper dames, low slung guitars, and hair...lots and lots of hair. This was the Sunset Strip music scene in the '80s. A poisonous cocktail of post-Mötley Crüe metal meets Van Halen influenced cock rock, served with a healthy dose of Hanoi Rocks pout and New York Dolls trash. The Hollywood, CA scene held a lot of weight, spurning other likeminded bands throughout the rest of the world, so it wasn't any surprise to find that just up the coast San Francisco had it's own thriving punk/metal/glam thang goin' on. So by 1986, Hollywood had Poison and Guns N' Roses, and the Bay Area had JETBOY and the Sea Hags. But JETBOY were always different from the rest…a little more warped, and a lot more punk." That pretty much sums up the early '80s West Coast music scene. But JETBOY always were "…a little more warped, and a lot more punk," and that's what set them apart form the "Baskin Robbins…flavor of the week" crew that arose in L.A. and flooded the West Coast. That and their MUSIC! While many of the L.A. Glam Punks of that period have come and gone, JETBOY have doggedly survived…and grown! Sure…they went through all of the "early years" stuff: Their teenaged beginnings in 1983, with the momentous meeting between co-founders Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod, spurred into a lasting musical friendship via their similar musical tastes… Stones, AC/DC, KISS, Aerosmith, Girl, Starz, Cheap Trick, and the Sex Pistols. Their attempt at an early band collaboration with drummer Ron Tostenson and bassist buddy of Fernie's, Todd Crew. The arrival of Jerseyite vocalist Mickey Finn…drunk as a lord, in the alley behind the Mabuhay Gardens in North Beach. Through it all evolved JETBOY…San Francisco's premier contribution to the genre. "We were fortunate to blow up quick," recalls Finn. "In California, we seldom had to play for a small crowd. We played a lot of good, quality gigs to packed houses and built a following pretty quick." By 1984, they'd begun their requisite "garage recordings"…yes, in Billy's parent's garage…which resulted in their tracking live faves like: "Little Teaser," "In The Alley," "Don't Mess With My Hair," and "Car Sex." All tracks and tunes fresh enough to snag the attention of fans not only in San Francisco, but beyond. Kerrang! and Canada's Metal Forces even published reviews of JETBOY's Pink Demo. So the next step? Why go to L.A., of course. But the thing that set JETBOY apart from the rest was their infectious "punky" attitude. Not poseurs, like the rest, they were the real deal. It worked. By '89 they had snagged "the tours:" The U.S., with with Kix, Cheap Trick, Stryper, & Vixen. The big 60,000 stadium summer festival Day On The Green with Motley Crue, Whitesnake & Poison in 1987. And loads of early club shows with Guns 'n' Roses, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, Johnny Thunders, Iggy Pop, WASP, Toy Dolls, Jane's Addiction, Cherry Bombz, Poison, Lords Of The New Church, Specimen and so on ....and so on. JETBOY even had a hit single on MTV's Headbangers called "Feel the Shake" and, of course, nailed the obligatory interview VJ Adam Curry. They even did a Rock The Vote Commercial In 1990. They had made it. So what's up now? No surprise…they're still together! And rockin' it harder than ever. JETBOY's New DVD/CD IS IN STORES NOW!!!, and is a mothah! It's called "The Glam Years Movie And CD," and iTunes already has the audio version. But it doesn't stop there. There are six out of the total of 21 tracks (yeah…that's right 21 total tracks!) on the DVD/CD that have been previously released, so you can touch Jet with those, right away. True to their Punk Glam roots, though, there's vinyl, too! The vinyl's got 8 tracks from the CD plus two heretofore unavailable LIVE cuts, that are not on the CD. You'll also discover 2 NEWLY recorded trax, including "Feel The Shake (2007 version)" and their stellar version of the classic "Folsom Prison Blues." You'll find "The Glam Years Movie And CD" at Best Buy, WalMart, Amoeba and virtually every other retail record store with any taste at all, across the States. Japan & Europe? Just you wait…they're workin' on it! After completing GIT in 1985, the Michigan native briefly taught guitar before joining Megadeth in 1987 to record and tour behind their platinum album So Far, So Good…So What! While Young found himself in the exciting epicenter of thrash metal, his own musical tastes extended well beyond that genre. After leaving Megadeth and immersing himself for several years in studies of classical, flamenco, gypsy jazz and other world music styles, he resurfaced in the late 90s with a new musical partner, Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Badi Assad. His three-year collaboration with Assad (1997-2000) resulted in their dual recording Badi Assad Chameleon, a #1 hit in Europe. The two opened concerts for such artists as Joe Cocker and Cassandra Wilson and performed at Lilith Fair in 1999 and Farm Aid in 2000. In recent years, Young successfully fought testicular cancer and focused on completing his solo recording debut, Equilibrium, which will feature his work on flamenco, classical, six- and 12-steel string acoustic and electric guitars. The album is set for release in 2008. Since opening its doors in 1977, Musicians Institute has primed over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and industry professionals for successful careers in every genre of contemporary music. Located just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. Within a few years, GIT was joined by bass and drum programs to form Musicians Institute and the evolution has continued to this day with degree and certificate programs for career-minded guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, recording engineers, independent producers, guitar makers, music business professionals and filmmakers. Boston natives Bury Your Dead are forging ahead to the future with new vocalist Myke Terry (formerly of Cassius) in tow. The band has returned to Florida's Audiohammer Studios, the exact studio where their previous release Beauty and the Breakdown was recorded. Bury Your Dead have also brought back producer Jason Suecof (Trivium, God Forbid), continuing with the theme of tradition. "Bury Your Dead is a band consistently doing the right things to help keep the hybrid of metal and hardcore on the map," said Outburn Magazine of Beauty, just one of many outstanding assessments this band has received. Keeping everyone on the edge of their seats, drummer Mark Castillo adds, "All I have to say is the new Bury Your Dead isn't what people are going to expect. You really have to hear this." The yet untitled album is due in stores this spring. |
