Antithesis By: Jonathan Mariante |
|
Antithesis are a heavy metal band from Ohio. They sound a great deal like Iced Earth. Singer Ty Cook, for example, is a dead ringer for Matthew Barlowe! Their sound, like Iced Earth's, could be described as Iron Maiden meets Slayer, (with a dash of Pantera thrown in), combining heaviness and aggression with melody and power, and a dark, haunting flavor, with lyrics that explore the dark side of the world. Now, these guys are certainly talented. Guitarists Sean Perry and Paul Kanjicija can certainly shred. They solo as if possessed, and even play some beautiful, classical style melodies on songs like "Times Of Trial", "Deceiver Within", and the title track. The other members, drummer Paul Kostyack, bassist James Lewis, and the aforementioned Ty Cook are also good at their respective jobs; the playing is tight and tough, the music hard hitting and heavy, dark and melodic at the same time, and they write some intelligent lyrics. However, it seems to me like they are trying too hard to sound like Iced Earth when they should be trying to sound like themselves. There's already an Iced Earth. These guys have what it takes to be a very good heavy metal band, so they shouldn't try to be such blatant copycats. They should be themselves, and do something more unique and original. Stay metal (That goes without saying, of course), but do it YOUR way, and don't just try to be photocopies of your heroes, when you have the potential to be the real thing!
