Shadowcaster - Freedom

By Jonathan Mariante

Very cool! Shadowcaster is a band from Wisconsin who play straight-ahead, no frills metal, the way it was meant to be! They sound very influenced by early Fates Warning. The album kicks off with the hard-driving title track, an appropriate tune in wake of the recent terrorist attacks; "But you tried to take what I need/That's my freedom/No! You can't take that from me/my freedom". Almost like an open letter to the terrorists! Two more rocking metal tunes follow, "Agony In The Garden" (presumably about the Biblical tale of Christ's pre-crucifixion suffering) and "Hard To Believe". This is followed by "Crusade", an epic tune that is over twelve minutes long, and divided into three parts, "March To War", "Valley Of Sorrows", and "Journey's End". Another rocker follows with "Voices", after which comes a Sabbath-inspired, funeral march type tune, "Welcome To My Dream". Three more smoking tunes come next-"Death Wish", "Trust" (which attacks society's injustices) and "No Friend Of Mine". Some midtempo metal is up nest in "Over Again", and the album closes with a ballad called "Nothing Lasts Forever", an ode to a lost friend. These guys can rock! They are very good musicians and play some kick ass metal! Hopefully Shadowcaster will cast their shadow over the metal scene, and rise to the top! They deserve to! Keep your eyes peeled for these guys!
