Meat Puppets "Alive In The Nineties" (MVD)

By Paul Autry

Let's assume for a moment that the reason you're reading this review is because you're a fan of the Meat Puppets. That way, I don't have to explain their musical style to you because, after watching this release, I wasn't all that impressed. Seeing as I wasn't impressed, I don't wanna go into detail about what you're gonna hear and I'm not interested in writing a musical review so to speak.

So, what am I gonna do? Well, how about if I simply tell you what you're gonna get if you purchase this release? That works for me. Let's start with the main program. As the title would suggest, it's live footage, recorded in the 90's. You get three songs from their 1994 arena tour, four songs from a 1994 in store appearance. These tunes, "Station," "Coming Down," "Violet Eyes" and "Wonderful Song" are presented in acoustic form. The same goes for the two from a 1993 show at The Knitting Factory. Closing out the main program are five tunes from a tour of Italy in 1992. Personally, I found this footage a bit hard to watch because it all seemed like it was something you would see on a bootleg video, which is actually what this is in a more professional sort of way. It's loud, it's raw, it's rock 'n' roll, baby. There's some good bonus footage on here. Interviews mostly. The video for "We Don't Exist," a slide show, which was rather cool, and a live version of "Good Golly Miss Molly" from 1994. It comes with a three panel fold out that has liner notes explaining most of the live footage. I'd describe this release as a bootleg video in a professional package. If you're a Meat Puppets fan and you have a DVD player, yeah, I'd suggest checking it out. http://www.musicvideodistributors.com
